6) Joseph’s Rude Awakening – Matthew 1:18-25

Join me as I take a walk through the pages of Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John, (aka the “Gospels”) in a Chronological Order and try to grow closer to, and learn more about Jesus.  Feel free to go back and read the INTRO ABOUT THIS SERIES to understand where all this came from for me.

Today’s passage is found in Matthew 1:18-25 and follows up the long listing that Matthew gave about the line of Jesus’ heritage that I talked about earlier in another post.  I love being able to tag past editions, it is like the footnotes in my Bible and how it connects to other passages – it is always interesting to then go over and check those out to pick up another part of the story or a different setting.

You wanna talk about a RUDE AWAKENING – imagine Joseph’s life.  My man is just going along doing his carpentry thing, got him a good job in the city, (not really – don’t think Nazareth was much of a real city but it fit the lyric) a lovely bride to be, the man has been living his life in obedience to God the Father (vs. 19 says he was a RIGHTEOUS man – and I don’t think that means like back in the day that he was GROOOOOVY MAN).

Things were really falling into place – then his world got ROCKED, his honey was found out to be PREGNANT – WHAT YOU TALKIN’ BOUT FOOL???  You see I think we so easily just gloss over this part to get to the end – “oh yeah, he still accepts her, they have a baby, it is Jesus blah blah blah” –  COME ON PEOPLE this guy goes from thinking that his life & his woman is perfect to now it is all in shambles.  I mean I’m sure he had middle-school health class and knew how babies were made, so his sweet lil virgin bride was NOT A VIRGIN, not only that she now has a baby by some other daddy and now HE HAD TO DEAL WITH ALL THAT.  I bet he was shocked, stunned, angry, hurt, overwhelmed, depressed, and the list goes on and on.

But his next RUDE AWAKENING was one that brings some peace out of the pain.  He was visited by an Angel of the Lord and told that this was not what he thought.  Mary had not been unfaithful and that he didn’t have to let her go.  (That’s another cool thing to notice – even with Joseph REELING from the bad news of her pregnancy – he was still not going to disgrace her publicly – vs. 19 – he was going to divorce her quietly – Joseph is one cool cat and to me that shows he really loved Mary – how easy it would be to just “air her dirty laundry” and sell her out as a fornicator and sinner – serious respect to my man Joseph – now that really is RIGHTEOUS – and this time I DO mean groooovy)

Joseph both HEARD and LISTENED to the Angel and took what he had to say and processed it and made the decision to still stay with Mary – EVEN THOUGH he knew what that may mean.  I mean come on – your “wife to be” is pregnant, you decide to stay with her, AND you are trying to tell your friends an “angel” showed up and told you it was okay – AND that the baby who was created “out of wedlock” was going to be the Son of God, Savior of the World – what the HECK have you been SMOKING’ Joseph????  But my man was ready & willing to do what it took to be TRUE to his Lord and to his LOVE – Mary.

Man this is some good stuff – but to me the really cool part is found in vs. 25 – a part that I had never really thought about before (and you may think I am making too much of this, that’s your right & your opinion – as well as your ability to be WRONG ha ha ha) – but look at what vs. 25 says.

25But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

You know what this is saying to me, Joseph wasn’t interested in “making it go away” or any type of “cover-up” to make it seem legit.  He didn’t take her home as his wife & then try to sleep with her so that maybe, just maybe people might think that the baby had happened by normal circumstances.  Also he wanted to MAKE SURE that there was NO QUESTION that this happened as a Virgin Birth – so that the prophecies mentioned in vs. 23 would not be questioned.  You see Joseph risked his reputation and his friends and family SIMPLY To keep in tact the CRAZINESS that was God’s Will for his and Mary’s life – that is AWESOME.

So Joseph’s life was full of some serious RUDE AWAKENING’S during all this time, but he was truly Awakened to the reality that GOD IS IN CONTROL and God’s ways are higher than our ways and we need to be willing to “risk it all” in order to be obedient to Him!

Thanks Joseph for not just “making do” but being willing to RISE ABOVE and GO BEYOND to do all that God asked you to do!
