11) The “Wonder Years” – Luke 2:41-52

Join me as I take a walk through the pages of Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John, (aka the “Gospels”) in a Chronological Order and try to grow closer to, and learn more about Jesus.  Feel free to go back and read the INTRO ABOUT THIS SERIES to understand where all this came from for me.

Our section of scripture today is found in Luke 2:41-52.  You may notice a HUGE JUMP from our last section, in Jesus’ age.  There isn’t much written about the life of Jesus from the time Mary & Joseph & Jesus return to Nazareth and when Jesus begins His earthly ministry around the age of 30.  In fact this is THE ONLY STORY that we have about Him.  Often times people refer to this section as “THE WONDER YEARS”.

The_Wonder_Years A couple months ago I had the opportunity to preach about this passage at Christ’s Church @ Cobb.  I titled the message “THE WONDER YEARS” (if you have any interest in checking it out find it on our media page – scroll down to 6-7-09 and click on link to listen or RIGHT CLICK and you can download the mp3)- and sort of made reference back to the old show “THE WONDER YEARS”.

The basic story from this passage is all about 12 year old Jesus and his family making their yearly visit to Jerusalem for the “Feast of Passover” – Mary and Joseph would have travelled there each year because they were devout Jews.  This time around would end a little differently.

home-alone-1 After being there for the celebration the family packed up and headed home, but they didn’t realize Jesus wasn’t with them.  This would not have been too out of the ordinary since the people travelled in such large groups back in those days.  It wasn’t like one of the “HOME ALONE” movies where the parents were simply careless or the child was being rebellious.  After they had travelled the first  day they realized Jesus wasn’t with them and they had to go back.

After 3 days they found Jesus (remember HE IS 12) and He was at the Temple – ROCKIN’ PEOPLE’S worlds!  Check out what everyone thought of Him! These were not just regular, ordinary people either – these were the religious leaders and teachers of the Law!

He was even ASTONISHING His own parents.  They didn’t know what to make of all of this, but I believe they knew something SPECIAL was taking place.  Jesus knew that He simply needed to be OBEDIENT to His Heavenly Father and was to be about God’s business there in the Temple at that time.

Then I LOVE how this section closes – and this was the main thrust of the message I gave about this.  VERSE 51 –  “Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.” EVEN though Jesus was realizing His connection with Almighty GOD, He knew He needed to stay with His earthly parents and be OBEDIENT to them.  There is also this neat phrase at the end that Mary “treasured all these things in her heart.” This is also found at the time of Jesus’ birth earlier in Luke 2 – verse 19 – it says the same thing about her.  I believe Mary was getting the picture of WHO Jesus was becoming & WHAT He was going to be about – that is “HIS FATHER’s BUSINESS”.

I wish I could more fully get that picture each day and learn to be more about MY Heavenly Father’s business!
